Enough already! I have now been sick for 10 full days. I came down with something late on the 28th and it has just gone on and on and on. I had to bail on my colleague's New Year's Eve party and just finished canceling my Sunday plans to go antiquing with friends. The venue is outdoors, and it is cold and damp these days and I don't think I could survive yet another setback. I'm not very good at being sick (although I would have you note that I seem to schedule all sickness for in between semesters; this is why I have sick days banked like nobody's business--not a good thing). The first four days of this misery entailed trips between the bed and the couch and back again--and lots of really, really bad TV. By Sunday I was feeling semi-better. The aches and chills were fewer and much farther apart. And I was SO sick of looking at dust and Xmas debris, that I decided to give the living room the most thorough cleaning it has seen in a year--or maybe ever. I mean, I moved furniture around, rearranged the huge persian rug and pad, dusted paintings and *behind* the TV and speakers, got out furniture polish, and generally cleaned like the crazy person I am. And of course, the next day I had a nice relapse. At this point, I think I'm mostly nursing the tail-end of a sinus infection. At least I'm well enough to cook, and to read, and to be really happy that I haven't yet heard whether or not my spring furlough schedule is formally approved. The latter keeps me from having to worry about constructing syllabi. It's the little things in life that get us through.

Spin on Spin
CNN-HD, where the hell is your signal??? They've lost it! and right before Michael McDonald was about to sing. Now I'm having to watch the Obamarama on Fox. What a side show that it is. I sure hope I don't have to watch Obama's speech on this channel. What a travesty that would be.

A Day of Throwing Things Away
Yesterday, I went in to work and had a wonderful day of throwing stuff away. Reams and reams of stuff (it was very exciting). I'm going to do more of this on Monday, but today I am reading a thesis, making some more progress on a review that is due soon, and enjoying the Olympics. Speaking of the Olympics, we watched the opening ceremonies last night. They were truly, truly amazing. Two summers ago, we got a very quick glimpse of the stadium under construction. It was clearly massive and artful, but who could have imagined all the computer technology and mechanical engineering that made last night's show so phenomenal? And the costumes, and the choreography, and the precision of the performers. It was absolutely spectacular (and I'm so happy I got to watch a shortened, air-conditioned version of it).

J & K + 8
I'm watching Jon and Kate plus Eight with MP1 and TH* and let me just say: OMG! omg, omg...I would need serious medication. I couldn't do it. BUT, I did iron 8 (eight) shirts this morning in an effort to NOT accomplish any real work (of the academic sort). Actually, I revised a letter this morning and I worked out and I made us all some lunch. But alas, I've now got to do some serious work, and watching J & K plus 8 reminds me that I have *nothing* to complain about.
*TH is taking an official "vacation day" from chairdom (it's our anniversary and we are going out for tapas tonight!), but he is still working non-stop on enrollment bs and all the usual complaints from every quarter and the peeeeeeoooooopppplllleeeee. Blech, you could not pay me enough to do that job. Along the same lines, you also could not pay me enough to consult for the company that keeps e-knocking at my door. Every year for about 5 years, now, they write and ask me to join their "group," which does legal work in my area of research. I know expert witnessing pays a lot, but the stress of the entire gig would kill the bonus $ for me. I didn't become an academic (and suffer through the tenure process) to start stressing myself out all over again and marching to other people's drums. Even for big $. I'll do "my part" in this domain of advocacy by means of academic research and writing. But, I would love to be a fly on the courtroom wall in some of these cases .

Speechless
You really MUST watch this to the bitter end. Having posted the last line in quotation form on my office door some years back, I can now enjoy the entire speech act.

Just Waiting for the Daily Show
I surely hope that Jon Stewart doesn't disappoint me tonight. Bush gave him SO much material in his press conference this morning that I've been waiting all day to see if the time spent watching our fearless leader can possibly be salvaged by a couple comic (and here I mean, funny on purpose) replays.
