forget furloughs

Dear Union:

I will not be voting for furloughs next year. I just wanted to let you know this. Academic life doesn't lend itself to the concept of the furlough (as we all know and have said one hundred times). For instance, I've been furloughed today and yet working from 9 am to 10:45 pm. Please take note: I am not surprised or even complaining. This is what I signed on for. At the same time, let us call the furlough what it is: a (hopefully temporary) pay-cut. More work (filling out furlough paperwork, reorganizing committee meetings, meeting grad students off campus since we aren't supposed to "work," etc), less pay.

I hope it all works out for you over there. I truly do.
